When President Trump signed the new immigration funding bill on July 4, it sent shockwaves through communities of faith, immigration advocates, and those of us who care deeply about the people behind the policies.

We sat down with Jennie Murray, President & CEO of the National Immigration Forum (and one of our founding partners), to unpack what’s really in the bill—and what it means for our immigrant neighbors.

Here are the big takeaways:

The Money Trail

$145 billion is now allocated for immigration.
$70 billion will go toward border security, even as crossings are already decreasing.
$75 billion is marked for interior enforcement, the most concerning section for advocates. This includes detention and deportation practices that could escalate rapidly.

Unprecedented Fees

For the first time, humanitarian applicants, including moms and children fleeing violence, will face application fees.
Seeking asylum could cost over $600 upfront, plus renewals.
Families reuniting with unaccompanied children could face $6,500 in fees, a cruel financial hurdle for already traumatized families.

Good News (Yes, There’s Some!)

The bill funds 100 new immigration judges, helping address case backlogs that leave families in legal limbo for years.
There’s a silver lining: this bill might clear the legislative air for new bipartisan solutions, which we’re watching closely.

Advocacy Matters: What You Can Do

Jennie offered three clear paths forward:

Hold Officials Accountable.
Ask how the funds, especially for enforcement, will be used. Prioritize humane treatment and ensure only those with serious criminal backgrounds are targeted for deportation.
Push for Bipartisan Reform.
With the “border bill” passed, there’s new energy in Congress for real solutions. Let’s advocate for legal pathways, dreamer protections, and smarter reforms.
Support Local Ministries.
